February 3, 1875

Roland Mather donated $19,000 to the Asylum Hill Congregational Society for the completion of the church’s steeple. Mather’s letter made clear his position that the church building was unfinished without the steeple. This is, so far, the only reference to the church being incomplete that I’ve found.

The Courant indicated that the stone for the steeple would be quarried as soon as possible.

April 1, 1875

The Courant reported that work on the steeple would begin by or about this date.

August 23, 1875

The last stone was put into place in the steeple.

The Courant reported that the staging had been removed from the upper part of the steeple. It does not appear that the work was quite finished at this point, but this is the last article about the construction that I’ve been able to find.
