There is some disagreement among the sources as to just what the society bought. According to the Hartford Daily Courant, the society bought 382 feet of land along Asylum Avenue. This frontage along Asylum Avenue corresponds with the modern length of the street frontage between Huntington and Sumner Streets, and it would also include three houses, all of which would be constructed and occupied by 1869. (Only 782 Asylum Avenue remains of these three houses.) According to The History of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford, Connecticut, Centennial 1865-1965, the society only bought 188 feet along Asylum Avenue. This street frontage corresponds approximately to the distance from the corner of Huntington to the church’s current driveway off of Asylum Avenue, or in other words, the street frontage of the church after it was constructed in 1865.
