Establishing dates after which Calvin Stowe could have begun his Bible study.

1862-1864

Harriet Beecher Stowe came to Hartford periodically to oversee the construction of Oakholm. Calvin Stowe and Harriet Beecher Stowe both visited Hartford during this period, as Calvin prepared for retirement from Andover Seminary. Calvin also occasionally led Sunday services in Hartford while on these visits.

November 4, 1860

The first Sunday school class on Asylum Hill took place at the West Middle School.

Possible starting year for the Bible study. According to Atwood Collins (1915), “the first of these [prayer] meetings probably was held in 1861," and he said that the classes had started at “[a]bout the same time” as the first of the prayer meetings.

November 1863

Melva Swartz (1940) reported that Stowe started his Bible class “[a]bout three years after the organization of the Sabbath school,” which began on November 4, 1860.

May 30, 1864

The Hartford Daily Courant published a commentary on a recent article published in The Round Table, in which the author purported to have visited Harriet Beecher Stowe’s house in Hartford.

June 25, 1864

The Asylum Hill Congregational Society was formed.

December 15, 1864

An ecclesiastical council convened to examine George H. Gould, who had been called to serve as pastor of the Center Congregational Church. Calvin Stowe was a member of this council, and the Courant described him as being “of this city.”

December 19, 1864

Calvin Stowe and Harriet Beecher Stowe move to Hartford.

March 4, 1865

The Asylum Hill Congregational Chapel was completed.
