The Instrumentalities of the Beginnings of the Church

Also known as the Three Necessities of the Community: first Sunday [Sabbath] School Class, November 1861; first Neighborhood Prayer Meeting, 1863; first Bible Study Class, 1864.

Additional details: “preliminary institutions” referred to by Joseph Twichell, November 28, 1886; “instrumentalities” coined by James S. Tryon, 1890

The instrumentalities reflected the growing population on Asylum Hill, 1860-1865; the distance from Asylum Hill to the nearest churches downtown; and the difficulty of traveling on Hartford’s dirt roads, especially in winter.
