The earliest reference to Green and x-rays that I have found, which was in a July 1896 Courant article, dated Green’s research to the discovery of x-rays, while one of his obituaries timed Green’s research to the announcement. Green said only that he started his research after reading about the discovery of x-rays – he didn’t say which newspaper. Although the July 1896 article probably meant the announcement of the discovery and not the discovery itself, resolving this dispute in the record could validate the later claims made about Green’s primacy within the field.
