January 22, 1896

The Courant published an article on the discovery of x-rays, and Henry Green began his work with x-rays on or shortly after this date.

April-June 1896

Green and his business partner John Bauer noticed burns caused by x-rays on their hands. Their hands first became irritated and sore, then they became calloused, and then sores developed. Usual treatments for burns including ointments had no effect.

Before December 8, 1904

Green and Bauer had both been burned through prolonged exposure to x-rays. Green’s body was burned, but not as badly as hands. Bauer’s body and face were burned, and his skin was blotched.

December 8, 1904

Both Green and Bauer were now under the care of Emil G. Reinert, a local doctor. Reinert had cauterized Green’s and Bauer’s burns after everything else he tried had proved ineffective. Green had also begun to wear cotton gloves. Green had rejected skin grafts that because he believed it would have impaired his ability to work. Green anticipated that his hands would begin to “heal rapidly.”

John Bauer underwent an operation that amputated his left ring fingers.

Between May 1906 and September 1908
