Some – but limited! Insights into George Affleck’s network in and around Hartford. Asylum Hill nodes in his network will be identified as they are discovered. |
Organized ca. 1850 or shortly thereafter; aka Asylum Hill Nurseries or Affleck Nursery. George Affleck ran the Asylum Hill Nursery from 1850 until his death in 1880. The business had greenhouses that allowed him to cultivate plants during the winter. He grew and sold a variety of plants, but he appears to have been best known for his roses and the bouquets that he or Robert Marchant made with them. After Affleck’s death, Robert Marchant appears to have taken this business over. Marchant may have specialized in orchids at this point. |
Member. Founded in 1849; promoted farmers, florists, and home gardens. At least through the 1850s, the society was very active, hosing weekly exhibitions in Hartford from May through October each year. George Affleck and his brother Henry were regular exhibitors, and reports on the exhibitions provide a picture of what each man (as well as the other participants) were growing and harvesting. The reports indicate that George was well-known for his roses, while his brother Henry was known for his strawberries. William Affleck also exhibited at least once. |
Considered one of the founders of the church. |
