Convocation held for centennial of Trinity Episcopal Parish

A convocation in honor of the centennial of Trinity Episcopal Parish was held at Trinity Episcopal Church.

  1. A procession began the convocation
  • Led by cross and torch bearers and robed choristers
  • Included 50 civic guests and clergy
  1. Kingsland Van Winkle led the ceremony
  2. Betty Knox read a resolution from the Hartford City Council
  3. Albert C. Jacobs spoke about the connection between Trinity College and Trinity Church
  4. Robert I. Catlin brought greetings from the Greater Hartford Council of Churches.
  5. John S. Esquirol spoke about Trinity Episcopal Parish’s future.
  6. Terence J. Finlay delivered the convocation sermon.
  7. The Trinity choir, directed by Robert Brawley, sang “Festival Te Deum” by Benjamin Britten, and Maria Kallitsi sang as soprano soloist.
  8. The offertory was an anthem by Paul Tchesnokov.

  1. The clergy in attendance included delegations from Episcopal churches in Connecticut as well as from churches of other denominations.

  • Carleton Sharpe
  • James N. Gettemy
  • Deans from the Hartford Seminary Foundation
  • Several former curates
  • Ministers who had entered the ministry from Trinity Episcopal Parish
  • Episcopal church officials
  1. Walter H. Gray, the Episcopal bishop of Connecticut, did not attend as he was in Canada at a church conference.

The convocation was preceded by a weeklong spiritual mission.

  1. Robert I. Catlin was a member of the board of directors of the Greater Hartford Council of Churches.
  2. John S. Esquirol was the sufragan Episcopal bishop of Connecticut.
  3. Terrence J. Finlay was rector of Saint Bartholomew’s Church, New York City.
  4. James N. Gettemy was president of the Hartford Seminary Foundation.
  5. Albert C. Jacobs was president of Trinity College.
  6. Betty Knox was a member of Hartford City Council.
  7. Carleton Sharpe was the Hartford city manager.
  8. Kingsland Van Winkle was rector at Trinity Episcopal Church.
