Anthony Choman applied for a permit to demolish a 2-story frame structure at the rear of 847 Asylum Avenue.

Choman estimated that the work would cost $500.

The application indicated that Irving Levy was the owner of 847 Asylum Avenue.

The application described the use of the building to be demolished as a garage, but it also stated that a barn was at the rear of the property.  Although it seems likely that the structure was a barn being used as a garage, a 1922 atlas shows two different, attached structures at the rear of the property.

Work to repair the garage began on January 23, 1958.

  1. On October 22, 1959, the utilities were informed about the demolition, although there were no utilities serving the structure.
  2. The building permit was approved by the City on October 23, 1959, and the permit was issued on October 26, 1959.
  3. On October 27, 1959, a municipal inspector visited the project in order to inspect the progress on the demolition.
  4. The City Engineer evaluated the application on October 29, 1959.
  5. The municipal inspector declared that the demolition had been completed on November 2, 1959.

The actual cost of the demolition turned out to be $282.63.

The cost of the demolition would be the equivalent of $3,122.19 in 2025.

City of Hartford.  “Application for building permit [847 Asylum Avenue],” October 20, 1959.
