Fabio F. Gustafson applied for a permit to provide fire safety features to 847 Asylum Avenue.

The fire safety features were:

  • Building a CB partition to enclose the boiler room;
  • Covering the cellar ceiling with 5/8” plaster board;
  • Changing all exit doors to swing outward;
  • Installing a fire alarm system; and
  • Installing exit signs

Gustafson estimated that the work would cost $2,490.

The application included a change in use to the house:  after this work it would become a “home for the aged.”

The house was formally converted to a rooming house on November 8, 1950.

  1. William J. Ennis will issue the permit for this work on February 18, 1955.
  2. An inspector will visit the project on March 1, 1955, and March 22, 1955.
  3. The inspector will declare that the work was completed on April 11, 1955.
  4. Repairs will be made on the wood cornice and the garage starting in January 1958.

The application described the type of construction at 847 Asylum Avenue as “ordinary.”

  1. The application listed Gertrude Berman as the owner of 847 Asylum Avenue.
  2. Walter Douglas was listed as the architect for the project.
  3. The actual cost of the work on this project would be $2,670, which in 2025 would be equivalent to $31,907.49.
