A dedication ceremony and open house were held for the official opening of the new wing of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company Building

  1. Over 900 people attended, comprised primarily of employees and their families and friends.
  2. The Connecticut Mutual Club staged Kathleen during the event.
  3. James Lee Loomis spoke at the event.

To make the open house more interesting, the printing plant, the Hollerith department, the photostat department, and the income agreement department were all up and running.

Another open house will be held tomorrow.

From Loomis’s remarks:

  • “A year ago it was a large and muddy hole in the ground. WE hope that today, when all is completed save a few finishing touches, it has an atmosphere of home to you.”
  • “In the improvement of our facilities and environment we believe we have made the working day a more pleasant one and thus a more profitable one to all of us in the company.”

  1. Kathleen was a musical comedy that had been performed in Hartford as early as 1921. It contained a “kissing scene” that was sufficiently scandalous at that time that it cost the actress playing the title role her position as lead soprano in the choir of the Simsbury Congregational Church.
  2. James Lee Loomis was the president of Connecticut Mutual.
  3. The Hollerith department would have housed a Hollerith machine, which tabulated punched cards. Its inventor, Herman Hollerith, founded the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, which was renamed International Business Machines in 1924.
