James L. Howard remembered at weekly prayer meeting

The regular weekly prayer meeting was held at the First Baptist Church this evening.

  1. Many people expressed their sorrow over the death of James L. Howard.
  2. A testimonial was read and then adopted unanimously.
  • The testimonial was ordered to be included in a memorial edition of the church paper to be published on June 3, 1906.
  1. It was voted to place a tablet in the vestibule of the church to his memory.
  • The money for the Howard memorial tablet was to be raised by subscription among the members of the church.
  • Howard Pattison and the church’s deacons were appointed to a committee to receive the subscriptions.
  1. It was voted that the addresses that would be given at a memorial service for James Howard planned for May 13, 1906, be printed in the memorial edition of the church paper to be published on June 3, 1906.
  2. At the end of the meeting, the people there sang “Blessed be the tie that binds.”

There was a “large attendance” at the meeting.

The funeral of James Howard was held on May 3, 1906.

A memorial service for James Howard will be held on May 13, 1906, at First Baptist Church.

  1. “His was a character of peculiar strength. He was positive in his views and convictions, yet his manner was courtly and courteous to all.  His sympathy was unbounded, and his hart, expanded by benevolence, responded to calls which taxed his time, abilities, and purse.”
  2. “While the church mourns they do not forget his family who are still with us. They have been his able supporters in many of his most cherished and successful plans.  They have been and we trust will long remain our fellow-workers in the things which he most loved.”

“Blessed be the tie that binds” was James Howard’s favorite hymn.
