The funeral of James L. Howard took place at 3:00 PM at 67 Collins Street.

  1. The service was conducted by Harold Pattison.
  2. There was no eulogy, but during his prayer, Pattison “referred feelingly to the nobility of Howard’s character, to his honorable career, to his generosity and to his good citizenship.”
  3. The Mendelssohn Male Quartet sang “The Lord is My Shepherd” and “How Firm a Foundation.”

On May 2, 1906, the Courant reported that George M. Landers of Landers, Frary & Clark Company would serve as honorary pallbearer.  He was replaced by Charles F. Smith today.

  1. James L. Howard died at his home on May 1, 1906.
  2. Last night, those attending the midweek meeting of First Baptist Church requested that L. C. Glazier give a message of affection to Howard’s family.

  1. The State Capitol closed at 2:00 PM in honor of Howard.
  2. The factory of James L. Howard & Company was closed during the afternoon.

  1. Burial in Spring Grove Cemetery followed the funeral.
  2. On May 10, 1906, the regular midweek meeting of First Baptist Church would be dedicated to remarks by anyone wishing to say something about Howard.
  3. On May 13, 1906, a memorial service for Howard will be held at the First Baptist Church.

  1. “… the large attendance also included many personal friends and people who had been associated with Mr. Howard in his business and church life.”
  2. “The Baptists of the city were well represented.”

  1. Harold Pattison was the pastor of the First Baptist Church.
  2. The Mendelssohn Male Quartet consisted of Herbert S. Bullard, Frederic M. Green, Charles E. Prior, Jr., and Clarence S. Shumway.
  3. Carnot O. Spencer and Curtis P. Gladding were deacons at First Baptist Church.
  4. William B. Clark was president of Aetna Insurance Company
  5. Sylvester C. Dunham was president of Travelers Insurance Company
  6. Frederick L. Bunce was president of the Phoenix National Bank
  7. Atwood Collins was president of the Security Company
  8. Charles F. Smith was president of the Landers, Frary & Clark Company in New Britain
  9. William A. Erving was secretary of the Hartford County Mutual Fire Insurance Company
  10. Henry Roberts was governor of Connecticut
  11. W. H. P. Faunce was president of Brown University
  12. George M. Stone was pastor of Asylum Avenue Baptist Church
  13. H. M. Thompson was pastor of the Memorial Baptist Church
  14. James Goodwin was rector of Christ Church
