Frank L. Howard died in Nauheim, Germany, at 7:00 PM.

The cause of death was heart disease and diabetes.

  1. On July 28, 1904, Frank along with his wife Julia, daughter Helen, and Helen’s fiancé Alvin Waldo Hyde left for Germany in hopes that baths at Nauheim would improve Frank’s health.
  2. Last week, the Howard family received letters that indicated that Frank’s health had been improving.

  1. Alvin Waldo Hyde sent a message to his father William Waldo Hyde that Frank had died. This message arrived in Hartford at 5:00 PM today.
  2. William then informed members of the Howard family of the news.
  3. His son James L. Howard, Jr. was in Manassas with the First Regiment, Connecticut National Guard.
  4. His son Frank E. Howard was out of town.

  1. “His illness dated back to the great blizzard of March, 1888. Howard was caught out in it and in his struggles against the storm he weakened his heart and was never strong afterwards.  It will be recalled that Roscoe Conkling of New York lost his life through the same storm.  He died soon after it.”
  2. “It is presumed that the party will return with the body as soon as possible, but no word of that had been received last night.

James L. Howard, Jr., who was apparently named for his uncle, was the adjutant in the First Regiment, CNG.
