The Post Office Department opened bids for the stamped envelope contract

David M. Key and A. D. Hazen opened bids that they had received for the federal contract to produce stamped envelopes and newspaper wrappers for the Post Office Department.

The Post Office Department received four bids:

  • Plimpton Envelope Company & Morgan Envelope Company - $387,068.12
  • George F. Nesbitt & Company - $395, 144.68
  • National Papeterie Company - $398,495.59
  • White, Corbin & Company - $399,793.98

The contract to be awarded will run from October 1, 1878 through September 30, 1882.

  1. The Plimpton Envelope Company was awarded the contract for stamped envelopes and newspaper wrappers on September 23, 1874.
  2. The Post Office Department had advertised for bids on June 1, 1878.

The Post Office Department will award the contract tomorrow.

 

“The contract will be awarded upon the basis of the number of envelopes, etc., etc., of each description furnished by the present contractors during the last year.”

  1. David M. Key was postmaster general.
  2. A. D. Hazen was the third assistant postmaster general.
