The US Patent Office issued Patent No. 190,980 for an improved paper box to Linus Plimpton.

  1. The invention as a book-shaped box or package that included a pocket attached to the inside of the lid of the box.
  2. The design allowed for paper to be stored in the pocket while envelopes were stored inside the box itself.
  3. The outer covering of the box could be altered in terms of color and design, but ultimately the intention was that the box would look like a book when placed on a shelf.
  4. The box also had a back piece made of wood, which provided rigidity and durability to the box.

“The package will stand upon a shelf evenly, as will a book, and it forms a neat, cheap, and strong package.”
