Fred Plimpton found a lost pocketbook that contained a large sum of money in it and returned it to its rightful owner.

Mrs. B. Clute had lost the pocketbook during the afternoon, while out driving.

Fred Plimpton declined the reward offered by Mrs. B. Clute.

The article in the Courant referred to “Mr. F. Plimpton of the Plimpton Envelope company,” and this could be either Frederic W. Plimpton or Frederick Plimpton.  Frederic was Linus Plimpton’s brother, and the Courant typically referred to him as “F. W.”  Frederick, middle initial unknown, was Linus Plimpton’s nephew (and not Frederic’s son), and the Courant tended to refer to him as “F.”  Hence, my guess that this refers to Frederick the nephew, not Frederic the brother, but I can’t really be certain.

  1. Mrs. B. Clute was from New York.  I’ll likely never figure out who she was!
  2. Frederick Plimpton was not Frederic W. Plimpton’s son – Frederick’s father was Daniel Bacon Plimpton, and his brother was James Manning Plimpton.

Unattributed.  “Lost and found,” Hartford Daily Courant, September 25, 1875, page 2.
