According to the Courant, the Plimpton Manufacturing Company had expanded to the upper floors of the Batterson Building in order to meet the demands of their contract to produce stamped envelopes for the US Post Office Department.
This expansion displaced W. C. Hutchings, a printer.
The Courant reported on October 30, 1874, that the Plimpton Manufacturing Company planned to add 16 new machines to its factory at a rate of one every five days.
The Courant reported rumors that W. C. Hutchings might merge his operations with Case, Lockwood & Brainard.
“The necessities of the Plimpton manufacturing company, under very heavy orders from the government, have obliged them to increase their facilities by taking the upper floors of Batterson’s building, occupied by W. C. Hutchings, the printer, who is now moving his materials for storage until his future course is decided upon.”
