The Courant reported that Marshall Jewell had signed a contract with George Reay to supply stamped envelopes on an emergency basis

According to the Courant, Marshall Jewell had concluded an “exigency contract” with George H. Reay to supply approximately 13 million envelopes to the Post Office Department.

The 13 million additional envelopes were expected to relieve both “pressure upon the department” and “matters at the Plimpton works.”

  1. The Plimpton Envelope Manufacturing Company was currently producing about 500,000 envelopes daily.
  2. George Reay would utilize stock that he had on hand, including a large number of envelopes.

Plimpton Manufacturing company began work to produce stamped envelopes for the Post Office Department on either October 12 or October 15, 1874.

On October 29, 1874, the Courant will report that the Plimpton Manufacturing Company was producing a large number of stamped envelopes daily.

George H. Reay had held the contract to produce stamped envelopes prior to Linus Plimpton.
