The Hartford Catholic Institute held a regular meeting this evening and unanimously adopted a resolution regarding Francis McFarland’s recent death.

  1. The institute resolved that it would mourn McFarland’s death for 30 days.
  2. At the end of the mourning period, the members of the institute would be required to attend a requiem mass held in McFarland’s honor.
  3. The resolution also required that its recording secretary to send copies of the resolution to McFarland’s surviving brothers and to submit copies to all of the Hartford daily newspapers and to the Catholic newspapers of the diocese.

The last line of the resolution is cut off, so the geographic range of the Catholic newspapers is a guess.

Francis McFarland’s funeral took place on October 15, 1874.

  1. “Pious: His devotion inspired us with new zeal when our ardor had grown cool and prayers arose slothfully from our negligent lips and indifferent hearts.”
  2. “His earnest zeal for the honor and glory of God, and the welfare and prosperity of His holy church, raised up even during his short stay amongst us a monument of the grandest character in the majestic edifice that adorns Mount St. Joseph, but even that enduring structure will be less permanent and lasting than his ever blessed memory, graven upon the hearts of his affectionate people, who mourn the loss of a father, teacher, guide and friend.

The Hartford Catholic Institute oversaw an orphanage for infants, and, according to the resolution, McFarland had supported the institute’s establishment of the orphanage.
