Hezekiah Huntington died in his room at the City Hotel at 4:00 this morning

The cause of death was “gout in the stomach.”

  1. He became ill early in the morning on February 17, 1865.
  2. Over the next three days, he “suffered greatly.”

The City Hotel was located at the former location of Daniel Crowell’s dry goods store, which was where Huntington was first employed after arriving in Hartford from Suffield.

  1. “It was his intention to take no more active part in business matters, and having disposed of his residence, he engaged rooms at the City Hotel preparatory to making an extended tour in foreign lands.”
  2. “Mr Huntington was, in some respects, a peculiar man in his social intercourse with his fellow men; yet those who knew him best found him genial and warm-hearted.”
  3. “As a business man he was quick in his perceptions: energetic and thorough in all his business appointments and duties, and has stood deservedly high as a skillful financier.”
