The Courant congratulated the American School for the Deaf on its purchase of property on Lord’s Hill

The Courant published an article that congratulated the American School for the Deaf on its purchase of property that had been part of the estate of Jared Scarborough.

  1. The article described the location of the property as
  • 7 acres situated on Lord’s Hill
  • ¾ of a mile west of the Court House
  • Near the Farmington & Litchfield Turnpike

  • A house and “out houses” that were “extensive and commodious”
  • Gardens that were “tastefully laid out” with “many pleasant walks”
  • Approximately 400 fruit trees, representing “ever kind” to be found in New England

  2. The structures on the property were reported as “not being calculated for this particular object” and that the school would begin immediately “such alterations and additions” in order to re-locate the school to the property.

  • Christopher Colt ($100)
  • Thomas Day ($50)
  • Chauncey Deming ($100)
  • Normand Knox ($50)
  • Joseph Morgan ($50)
  • Luther Scarborough ($150)
  • Charles Sigourney ($100)
  1. The article also noted that “funds are wanted to complete the payment of the foregoing purchase, and the subscription book is open in the hands of the Treasurer, J. H. Wells, Esq.”
  2. A committee to oversee the alterations and additions to the structures on the property had already been appointed.

With this purchase, Lord’s Hill would soon become Asylum Hill, and the Farmington & Litchfield Turnpike would become Asylum Street.

“The benevolent are hereby reminded that this Institution was founded in Charity, and is still altogether dependent on Charity, trusting in him moves the heart to Charity.”

  1. $8,600 would be equivalent to $217,404.78 in 2025.
  2. Donations toward the purchase would be equivalent to 2025 dollars as follows:
  • $50 = $1,263.98
  • $100 = $2,527.96
  • $150 = $3,791.94
  1. Christopher Colt was Sam Colt’s father.
  2. Joseph Morgan was Junius Morgan’s father and J. P. Morgan’s grandfather.
  3. Luther Scarborough was Jared Scarborough’s brother, and he handled, in part, Jared’s estate.
  4. Charles Sigourney was Lydia Huntley Sigourney’s husband.

  1. The article does not give the name of the school – it instead refers to “the friends of the Deaf and Dumb, and the patrons of the Asylum for their education in Hartford.”
  2. “The prospect of the surrounding country in unrivalled, both in beauty and extent, (a great advantage to the deaf who learn only or mostly by what they see)”
