Some of what is forgotten about Collins Street

Collins Street between Huntington and Garden Streets formerly consisted of single and two-family homes. In 1922, there were a total of 33 structures with 36 residences, while today there are 15 structures with 266 residential units. Demolition of the single and two-family homes began in 1928, as 132 and 156 Collins were replaced by two apartment buildings, which are extant. There was no further demolition until 1962, when 6 homes were demolished, and then during the next nine years 19 homes were demolished. At that point, Collins Street became the street it is today, and the only substantial changes have been the expansion of The Hartford’s headquarters at the corner of Garden and Collins and the construction of their parking garage at the corner of Collins and Sumner.
