Julia Turner placed an order for a clock for the Asylum Hill Congregational Church with the Seth Thomas Clock Company, Thomaston, CT.

  1. Turner’s gift was in memory of her father, Roland Mather.
  2. The clock will be made at Seth Thomas Clock Company’s factories in Thomaston.
  3. The Courant reported that workers from the clock company had already been out to measure inside the steeple.

The Courant reported on Turner’s purchase on July 14, 1897.

  1. Roland Mather gave the money to complete the steeple on February 3, 1875, and cut stone dials were placed on each of the sides of the tower section of the spire as part of constructing the steeple.
  2. Mather died on May 10, 1897.

Workers will install the clock on September 20, 1897.

  1. “The spire of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, one of the handsomest in the city, and the tallest, being 230 feet in height, is to have its architectural beauty enhanced and its usefulness to the community of the hill further enlarged by the presence of a large tower clock.”
  2. The clock “will give the most accurate time obtainable in a tower clock.”
