Joseph Twichell submitted his letter of resignation as senior pastor at Asylum Hill Congregational Church.

  1. Twichell addressed his letter to the committees of the church and the Asylum Hill Ecclesiastical Society and to the members of the church and the society.
  2. His resignation would be effective no later than July 31, 1912.
  3. He didn’t share his reason for resigning.

The Courant reported that Twichell’s family had been urging him to resign.

Howard Walter submitted his letter of resignation as assistant pastor on December 1, 1911.

Twichell’s letter would be read to the congregation on December 10, 1911.

From Twichell’s letter:  “Upon the considerations that have moved me to the adoption of this course, and of the feelings with which it is attended, I will not now dwell.  Only I beg you to believe that it is not without due deliberation, or without memories more grateful than I can express, of the unfailing, universal kindness you have manifested to me through all the nearly forty-six years during which I have been your minister.”

Both the 1915 and the 1940 anniversary articles that were published in the Courant say that Twichell resigned on December 13, 1911, the anniversary of his installation as pastor.
