Howard Arnold Walter submitted a letter stating his intention to end his service as assistant pastor at Asylum Hill Congregational Church at the expiration of his contract in March 1912.

  1. Walter’s contract was up in March 1912.
  2. He had discussed his plans with three members of the Asylum Hill Congregational Society.
  3. He delivered his letter to Arthur H. Bronson.
  4. He was ending his service at the church in order to become a foreign missionary.
    • He had wanted to become a foreign missionary previously but believed his “uncertain health” prevented it.
    • He would be working under the auspices of John R. Mott and the international committee of the YMCA.
    • He would be stationed in northern India.
  5. He would be in Hartford preparing for his missionary work through much of 1912 and perhaps into 1913.
    • He would study with D. B. Macdonald in Hartford.
    • He would then study and observe Muslims in Egypt and Turkey.
  6. He anticipated that he would continue to be involved with the church as a layman during this time.

According to the Courant article on his and Twichell’s resignation, announcement of Walter’s resignation was postponed as soon as it was learned that Twichell would resign, in order that Twichell’s resignation could be announced first.

Walter was installed as assistant pastor on November 18, 1910.

  1. On December 10, 1911, Walter would tell a Courant reporter that he had wanted to become a foreign missionary for a long time and that he had reached his decision by himself.
  2. Walter’s resignation would be announced on December 10, 1911, following the announcement that Joseph Twichell was resigning as senior pastor.
  3. B. MacDonald would pay tribute to Walter at his memorial service on November 24, 1918.
  4. John Mott would come to Hartford to attend John Voorhees’s funeral on January 10, 1919.

  1. From Walter’s letter: “Although my contract with you expires in March so that it might seem presumptuous in me to assume the possibility of further relations between us beyond that date, the fact that it has been unofficially intimated to me that a renewal of the contract in some form would be welcomed by you, requires me in all fairness to inform you at once that I have now definitely decided to terminate my relation with this church as assistant pastor next March.”
  2. From Walter’s letter: “I am therefore the more anxious that you should understand that in leaving a place where kindnesses have been so showered upon us and where we knew that anything we might in reason desire or need would be granted, the sole motive is an absolute and final conviction that a call ahs come from God to work in another part of His Kingdom, after the brief and imperfect but fairly exhilarating service in this city and this church.”

  1. Arthur H. Bronson was chair of either the Asylum Hill Congregational Society’s committee.
  2. Walter would go to work in Lahore, which is currently a part of Pakistan.
  3. An article in the Courant on February 14, 1915, would indicate that Walter resigned at the same time as Twichell, on December 13, 1911.
