Construction Finished at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church

The Courant reported that the staging had been removed from the upper part of the spire.

The solid blocks of the upper part of the steeple were held together by a heavy iron bar that passed through the middle of each and bound them together.

There remained some scaffolding on the lower part of the spire, which is to say that the job still wasn’t done, but this is the last mention of the work that I’ve been able to find so far.

Construction on the steeple was completed on August 23, 1875.

The clock would be installed on September 20, 1897.

“The men who went to the top of the spire reached a higher level than anybody in Hartford ever was at before except in a balloon.”

Unattributed, “Hartford and Vicinity,” Hartford Daily Courant, August 25, 1875, page 2.
